Consulta MySQL para calcular los precios promedio más recientes utilizando datos de varias tablas

Una opción sería una consulta que trabaje con variables de usuario para generar un ranking en base a fecha. Y solo seleccionar las tres últimas fechas.

Consulta

SELECT
 *
FROM (
   SELECT
   *
   , CASE
       WHEN @supplier = supplier
       THEN @rank := @rank + 1
       ELSE @rank := 1
     END
      AS rank
   , @supplier := supplier
   FROM
     Expenses
   CROSS JOIN (
    SELECT
       @supplier := NULL
     , @rank := 0
    )
    AS
      init_user_params
   WHERE
      product_id = 1
   ORDER BY
      supplier ASC
    , DATE DESC
)
 AS Expenses_ranked
WHERE
  Expenses_ranked.rank <= 3

Resultado

Usando esos resultados para generar una lista promedio por proveedor.

Consulta

SELECT
   Expenses_ranked.supplier
 , AVG(Expenses_ranked.cost / Expenses_ranked.quantity) AS AVG
FROM (

  SELECT
   *
   , CASE
       WHEN @supplier = supplier
       THEN @rank := @rank + 1
       ELSE @rank := 1
     END
      AS rank

   FROM
     Expenses
   CROSS JOIN (
    SELECT
       @supplier := NULL
     , @rank := 0
    )
    AS
      init_user_params
   WHERE
      product_id = 1
   ORDER BY
      supplier ASC
    , DATE DESC
)
 AS Expenses_ranked
WHERE
  Expenses_ranked.rank <= 3
GROUP BY
  Expenses_ranked.supplier

Resultado

supplier  avg

Ahora podemos usar un simple ORDER BY [] ASC LIMIT 1 para conseguir el proveedor más barato

Consulta

LIMIT 1

Resultado

Consultas más óptimas.

Lo que también es posible declarar las variables de usuario dentro de la instrucción where. Haciendo posible filtrar directamente la clasificación.

Consulta

 AND

ORDER BY
